About Monkey Type
A typing test that stays out of your way
Monkey Type started as a small side project for people who just want to know how fast they type, without signing up for anything. You open the page, click the text and start typing. That's the whole process: no account, no download, no waiting.
Speed is measured in words per minute, the same way typing teachers and employers do it. Five characters count as one word, and only the correct ones count. Accuracy is tracked for every keystroke, so fixing a typo quickly doesn't hide it. If you type 70 WPM at 96% accuracy, that's a number you can trust.
Made for regular practice
Once the basic test feels easy, try Levels. Each one asks for a little more speed and a little more care, and the list never ends. Early levels use short, common words. Later ones add capital letters, commas, question marks and numbers, which is exactly where most people slow down.
You can also change the text size, caret, theme and word difficulty, or add punctuation and numbers to any timed test. Everything, including your level and best scores, is saved in your own browser. We don't collect it and we can't see it.
Tips to type faster
- Look at the screen, not at your hands. It feels slow for a week, then it pays off.
- Keep your fingers on the home row. The little bumps on F and J help you find it without looking.
- Aim for accuracy first. Slow down until your errors are rare, and speed will follow on its own.
- Short daily sessions of 10 to 15 minutes work better than one long session on the weekend.
- Sit upright, keep your wrists relaxed and your elbows near a right angle.
- Use all ten fingers, and let your thumbs handle the space bar.

Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
WPM counts correctly typed characters divided by five, then divided by the minutes elapsed. Five characters equal one word.
What is a good typing speed?
The average is about 40 WPM. 60 to 80 WPM is fast, and above 100 WPM is professional level.
How do the endless levels work?
Each level gives you a WPM target and a minimum accuracy of 90 percent. Pass it to unlock a harder level with longer text, punctuation and numbers. There is no final level.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Your level, settings and best scores are stored in your browser only. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I play on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The layout adapts to any screen and tapping the text opens your keyboard. A physical keyboard gives more accurate speed results.
Is Monkey Type free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no account or download required.
